SUE FRANKLIN
Sue’s debut as an actress was at age seven in a film called ‘The Happiness of Three Women’ starring Petula Clark and Donald Huston. She went on to study at the Italia Conti Stage School, London, and appeared on TV in the Carroll Levis Junior Discovery Show and Crackerjack. Anthony Newley cast her and her stage twin as his daughters in the first national tour of ‘Stop the World I Want to Get Off!’.
She has performed in professional pantomime, cabaret and musicals in London and around the country including the Theatre Royal, Stratford East and the famous Deno’s Club in Manchester. The very first series of ‘Ready, Steady, Go!’ had Sue as one of the resident dancers.
Again with her stage twin, she played the Gemini twins in the national tour of ‘A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to The Forum’ with Dave King, Charles Hawtrey and some of the Crazy Gang. Sue has also appeared in ‘Hi-de-Hi’, ‘Only Fools and Horses’ and ‘The Fourth Protocol’.
In the late 70s she started the Arena Dance Studio in Colchester which she ran for twenty years, teaching disco, tap, jazz and character to both adults and children as well as putting on lavish dance shows. She currently takes American tap classes in Earl Soham on a Wednesday morning.
Whilst living on Mersea Island for about 30 years, she directed and/or performed in many amdram productions including ‘Toad of Toad Hall’, ‘The Snow Queen’, ‘The Boyfriend’, ‘Oliver!’ and numerous pantomimes. She also performed with the Colchester Operatic Society in ‘Hello Dolly!’ and ‘Camelot’ at the Mercury Theatre in Colchester. Sue is also a Relate trained counsellor.
Since moving to Suffolk Sue has appeared with Eyeswrite in ‘Inspector Prickle and the Case of the Village Hall Murder’ and Last Train. In 2010 she directed the Eyeswrite musical ‘La Vielle Ville’ at the Headmaster Porter Theatre in Framlingham.
With husband Robin, she formed Act One Productions which, so far, have staged three annual variety entertainments entitled ‘An Evening With Maud’ in their own Wisteria Garden Theatre. These are a mixture of poems, playlets, monologues and just a snippet of Shakespeare. Last year they produced ‘Murder At Murkey Bottom’ which Sue directed and Robin wrote. They are currently working on ‘Murder at Murkey Manor’ which will be performed at various venues in the summer of 2012. She has also been recording plays for Eyeswrite and SNYA for the past year.
