Robin Franklin

ROBIN FRANKLIN
As an artist and designer Robin has worked on a wide range of projects from brochures to exhibition stands, having originally studied product design at the Central School of Art, London. In the late 60s, he worked as art director on a film about the Red Baron with Oscar winning actor Cliff Robertson (sadly never completed). He has had several one man shows of his paintings and, in the mid eighties, wrote, produced and published a series of videos and a book for schools, which resulted in lectures, demonstrations and seminars around the country on illustration and modelmaking for design technology.
As well as free-lance work, Robin also worked at Colchester School of Art and Design for about forty years, as a part-time tutor and then full-time involvement in helping to run the school. He was involved with Sue in the many amdram shows on Mersea island, both as an actor and designing and making sets. In the mid 80s, for ‘Red Spy At Night’, he won the award for Best Actor in the North Essex Theatre Guild one-act play festival with wife Sue getting Best Supporting Actress.
He has always liked writing poetry , but his first attempt at play writing was ‘The Snow Queen’ which Sue directed in 1992. This not only introduced him to playwriting but to writing song lyrics as well. Since moving to Suffolk he has enjoyed performing in Eyeswrite productions such as ‘Inspector Prickle and the Case of the Village Hall Murder’ and ‘Last Train’ and designed and made the set for the musical ‘La Vieille Ville’.
With wife Sue, he formed Act One Productions which, so far, have staged three annual variety entertainments entitled ‘An Evening With Maud’ in their own Wisteria Garden Theatre. These are a mixture of poems (including those by Robin), playlets, monologues and just a snippet of Shakespeare. Last year they produced ‘Murder At Murkey Bottom’ which Sue directed and Robin wrote. They are currently working on ‘Murder at Murkey Manor’ which will be performed at various venues in the summer of 2012. He has also been recording and writing plays for Eyeswrite and SNYA for the past year.
