Willow is off to Nairobi in Kenya

Willow Garms, SNYA Radio’s Saturday morning breakfast presenter, is taking a few weeks off to travel to Nairobi in Kenya. Willow, Head Girl from Swaffham Hammond's High School, is part of the twenty-five strong team, comprising of mainly year elevens with a sprinkling of Sixth Form students, for the annual Rise Young Leaders Project (RYLP).
Willow tells SNYA Radio that she will be teaching at several junior schools including Dr Krapf and Martin Luther Primary Schools whilst visiting Jericho in Nairobi. Some of her friends are teaching subjects such as physical education or mathematics whilst Willow has planned to teach creative writing. She explains that she is expecting the children’s English to be quite weak so has designed a course that introduces the children to poetry via discussing feelings, drawing pictures and using picture imagery. We are expecting to teach between about thirty and forty students in each class, work with several classes of mixed ability primary school students and teach for two days at each of the Primary Schools.
Willow became involved with the project when Cherrie Crowly from Rise Young Leaders delivered a presentation at the school assembly, describing the project and showing images of previous visits. After volunteering to be a member of the team and a further five meetings the team are now prepared for their time in Kenya.
The flight is expected to take eight hours and will see the group cross over climates leaving our winter and arriving during the hottest time of the year in Kenya. The Hammond High School students have been vaccinated against Yellow Fever, Tetanus, Typhoid, and Hepatitis A in preparation for their time in Kenya.
This is Willow’s first trip to a developing country and she is really looking forward to the teaching the children. She also told us that she is worried that she will just give all her possessions away, once there, and already knows that it will be hard to return to the UK.
Willow told SNYA Radio that she didn’t want to feel her trip to Kenya was a holiday as she wanted to make a real difference and leave a future legacy for the Kenyan students. Her creative writing programme is designed for teachers to deliver once she returns to Britain and in addition, the team will be brightening up the schools by painting murals as a reminder to the community of their visit.
We look forward to a full update of Willows adventures on her return on 10th February.
