Matthew Fletcher Trophy
Category: News | Posted by: stevet
I didn’t have the pleasure of meeting Matthew Fletcher but yesterday my team and I met his mom and some of his closest friends. It was clear that Matthew was a very popular and greatly missed young man.
Stephen Bumfrey, our Patron, could not be with us as he was broadcasting his Sunday show for Radio Norfolk in Norwich but asked me to wish everyone a great day. My team, Alex Neal and Joshua Glasspoole, took the SNYA Mobile (in a trailer) Studio up to Cawston Primary School to entertain the supporters and encourage the teams. We commentated on Matthew’s friend’s attempts to beat the Norfolk Constabularies number one football team. After two years of failure this year Cawston’s youth team thrashed the visitors 6- 2.
This magnificent victory owes a lot to the presence of the SNYA Radio elephant but probably not the rubbish running commentary. Thanks go to a young man who acted as our technical adviser. He elevated my commentary from ‘he kicks the ball to someone else who kicks the ball to someone else’ to a new level including goal kicks, corners and fouls. I couldn’t have done it without you.
It is worth noting that the police only managed to score their opening goal when SNYA Radio played ‘don’t stop believing’ by Glee. I think that we may have also distracted the home team’s goalkeeper, Jack Kinsley, when we played his favourite artist, Justin Bieber,(only Joking) as the Police hammered in their second. The final goal was scored in a most fitting manner by one of the event organiser‘s and SNYA Presenter Olly Abel. (We won’t mention the policeman who toed it into his own net)
The event was well attended by villagers with the money raised going to ‘Help for Heroes’ and ‘Macmillan Cancer Care’ I am not sure of the total amount raised at the time of writing this article but it must be quite substantial as every villager seemed to win on the raffle.
The Cawston Youth Team of 2011
Jack Kinsley Michael Bentley, Olly Abel (1), Jake Bonner, Josh Moy (1 Pen), Toby Armiger(1), Callum Lake, Liam Waller, Sam Kinsley(1), Jonny Gale (2), James Fletcher, Lewis Abel and Joe Wright.
A big shout out to all those who attended this great afternoon's footie match and a special mention for the boy’s in the posh seats underneath the tree.
Clare Fletcher presented the winning team with the Matthew Fletcher Trophy and I am pretty sure that Matthew would have been proud of his friend’s magnificent victory.
The day was rounded off with a BBQ at the Bell Inn (very nice)
